South Node in Evolutionary Astrology: Meaning, Shadow and Medicine

The South Node: from stagnation to wisdom integration.

I made this one for all of you carrying the South Node, which is everyone, since it lives somewhere in every chart. What most are taught is that the South Node is the past to release. What I love about the South Node is that there is always treasure in it, and that the work is to bring its gifts and wisdom forward into the North Node. The South Node pairs with the Moon, so this one's the partner to the Moon post.

South Node, in words

What it feels like: Familiar.

The nodes are of the Moon, and they represent our emotional body on the deepest level. It is connected to the nervous system, how we react, how we respond.

The South Node is what is already so familiar in our nervous system: patterns that we go to, because we go to what we know, to where it's safe.

We come in with the history of humanity within the cellular memory of ourselves.

What most are taught: Leave it behind.

What most are taught about the South Node is the past to release. This is incomplete, and frankly, it does a disservice to the depth of what is there.

Go deeper and the South Node is the root system.

I call the Moon and her nodes the Trilogy of the Moon. The South Node is what has been, the North Node is the becoming, and the Moon is the be here now.

The overflow: Wisdom integration.

The work is to integrate: to bring the gifts and deep wisdom of the South Node forward into the service of the North Node.

The South Node holds our accumulated skills, memory, experience. Wherever your South Node is, you're so very good at it.

I didn't know I could paint until I started painting. That's South Node energy.

The overwhelm: Stagnation.

We resist, and we deny, and we repress who we are and what has happened, and this then becomes stagnation in the emotional body.

A false sense of self gets fixed in our emotional body, and then it becomes our identity.

I always say there are two parts to the South Node. The first asks: What do I need to let go of? The second asks: What do I want to claim?

How it ripens: Perpetual retrograde.

The nodes travel backwards, in a perpetual retrograde. We are constantly being pulled back into our past, so that we can readdress it from a higher perspective.

The nodal opposition comes at about ages 9, 27.5 and 46. The transiting North Node sits on the natal South Node.

The soul is being asked to integrate what it has been leaving behind.

The highest

The South Node is where the soul has its most hard-won capacity.

When we resolve the victimization from our past, we can truly harness the highest qualities of our South Node, and that is when we move to the North Node.

There is always treasure in the South Node. The question is whether you are drawing on it or drowning in it.
